This year most classes at Holy Name will attend Spanish class at least twice a week. These classes will cover basic Spanish speaking and listening skills and eventually writing and reading will be brought into the curriculum.
PreSchool and PreK has Spanish class once a week.These students have learned numbers, basic greetings, and are focusing on colors. Encourage students to practice colors in both English and Spanish to help them remember the words.
K-2 has Spanish class twice a week. Buenos Dias is a phrase commonly heard around the school from many students! This year K-2 has been speaking a lot of Spanish. The students are using a program called "Hola Ninos" to learn Spanish through pictures and storytelling. Challenge your student to recall the words and phrases they have been learning! There are songs and actions for most words or themes.
3-5 attends Spanish class three times each week. The addition of one class per week is to help students with retention of the language. These students have been learning a lot of Spanish. Being able to recall a lot from the previous year has helped many students succeed so far. Talking about the weather and seasons has been a big focus in these classes. The 4th and 5th grades are beginning to learn how to form simple sentences in Spanish.
6-8 gets to have Spanish as a regular class meeting four times a week. Every class begins with prayers and pledge in Spanish. Students will begin with basic introductions in Spanish and quickly move through numbers, the alphabet, and colors. These things will constantly appear in future lessons. There will be homework, quizzes, and tests throughout the year. It is expected that students complete homework on time and come to class prepared for quizzes and tests.
This year the students have been moving quickly through things they learned last year. Students are able to describe themselves and other people using many different adjectives. They can talk about likes and dislikes in Spanish. There has been more of a focus on culture this year, and students have been able to explore the Hispanic culture and learn about interesting holidays and traditions.
